Most entrepreneurs, corporations and even charities are using them each day in all of their communication mediums yet I wonder how many of them actually know the true meaning of these words. I think most people use these words very simply and therefore without knowing and living the true meanings are only setting themselves up for failure. I’m going to take a look a little deeper at what each one of them is for me. By doing this, you may see how many people are using them falsely and at the same time, how you and I can strengthen their presence in our work. Sustainability. Most people take this to be making decisions that achieve results in the present without sabotaging any prospects in the future. For me, sustainability in any situation has something more. It means that the decision you make must work in the long term, at least the next 10 years whilst continuing to produce results without you having to put in consistent work over 5 years. Leadership. Great leadership is done by example, but more importantly, a great leader has the ability to adapt intrinsically and extrinsically to create strong rapport with any kind of team member. Authentic Marketing. Any piece of work which is transparent and shows oneness in a physical, emotional and spiritual sense can be marketed authentically. This comes down to the marketeer’s values and beliefs about the product/service and their target market. Innovation. Another word for creativity. If you can create excellent, in-demand products and marketing campaigns, you can achieve success easily. When one expresses authentic self-expression, creativity becomes more apparent. The whole world is being transformed spiritually and it’s visible everywhere you look. Because of this, the corporate world is shifting too. And it musn’t just use these four key trends, it must really understand what it means in depth to it’s target market before confident application. And let’s also face the fact that most men do not even notice half the things you spend your hard-earned cash on in the name of looking good for them. Whether you’re a swinging single, have a boyfriend, or even a couple of boyfriends, you can still turn heads without blowing your entire paycheck on self-maintenance. Here are ten tips. 1. Grow your hair long. Forget the stacked and sprayed look, girls. Men want long, luxuriant locks that they can run their fingers through and maybe even give a gentle tug on once in a while to pay homage to their inner caveman. Save your money on expensive haircuts. Instead, have a friend trim those tresses at home (or do it yourself). Split ends are never in style no matter what look you’re sporting. 2. Cut your hair short. I know; I just told you to grow it and now I’m saying cut it. If you’re one of those pixie-face girls with milky skin and great shoulders who can leave the house wearing no makeup and still look hot… chop it all off! You’re naturally feminine and can get away with it. Keep the hair goop to a minimum. Again: the idea here is soft and natural. 3. Put on a skirt. If you’re married or have been dating the same guy for a while, you know the Skirt Reaction. It usually involves appreciative murmurs, spontaneous affection, and umm… well, I don’t need to explain further, do I? Your skirt doesn’t have to be Neiman Marcus. A denim mini that you paid 14 bucks for can look just as nice as whatever the models are sporting in your copy of Vogue, if you dress it up in just the right way. 4. Exfoliate. Ditch the foundation, ladies. Your boyfriend doesn’t apply beige paint to his face every time he leaves the house and neither should you. Face makeup looks unnatural, and I’ll bet your man would say it tastes kinda funny, too. Instead, pick up a tube of exfoliant for less than four bucks (it will last you at least five months). Scrub with it every four days or so, and you’ll be bright, rosy and cheeky as a schoolgirl. If you’re concerned about oil, buy a translucent powder compact at the Rite Aid and apply as necessary. 5. Paint your toenails and fingernails yourself. Do you actually pay other people to do your nails? Shame, shame. Manicures and pedicures rank high on the list of things Men Couldn’t Care Less About. Professional French Manicure, Pink Piggies Done at Home or even Naked Nails… it makes no difference to him. Save your money and have a finger-and-toe-painting party with a girlfriend or two. Eyebrow artillery: sharp trimming scissors, a good pair of tweezers. Step 1: brush eyebrow hair upward. Step 2: Trim straight across. Step 3: pluck stray hairs and define arches - and please don’t overdo it! Think Jennifer Aniston, not Bette Davis. 7. Avoid the Lumpy Look. The lumpy look occurs when your clothes are too tight. If the jeans are too small, find a top with tummy coverage. If you’re spilling over the bra cups, camoflauge with a thicker fabric shirt or sweater. The Lumpy Look is a semi-emergency situation that demands action. Either hit the stores for a bigger size, or get on Weight Watchers ASAP because girl, you’re in trouble. 8. Eyes or Lips - not both. The key to being tastefully attractive is downplaying one feature while up-playing another. If you decide to go with smoky baby blues, then opt for bare or clear lips that day. To show off your perfect pucker, select a nice flattering shade of lipcolor. Paint inside the lines (this is important - no man likes the Rodeo Clown look) and leave the eye makeup to a bare minimum. This same theory applies to your clothing. Legs on display? Cover up the belly. Cleavage peeking out? Hide that junk in the trunk. 9. Forget the tanning bed. Yes, fake tanners, we are all talking about how silly you look behind your back. Keep up the year-round tanning, and in five years you’ll resemble a Ball Park hot dog that’s been on the grill for far too long. Tan in a bottle is no better, especially with those telltale brown creases behind your knees. Do your skin a favor and keep tanning to the summer months. 10. Feel good about yourself, and smile! By far the best way to be attractive is to actually FEEL attractive. If you’re smiling and in a great mood, you’ll be naturally sexy no matter what you’re wearing. Put on your favorite tunes, go hang out with your best pals, get some fresh air and do the things you enjoy most in life. Diet and Exercise Evolution: Adaptation (part II) — Examples and Practical Advice

By David McCormick Understanding the theory of adaptation (see previous article, Adaptation I) will give you the tools to evaluate your diet and daily routine. If you have any question about whether something is good for you, always examine both the immediate effects and the adaptation effects equally. This article will look at various examples of adaptation and practical advice based on this important theory. Walking Is walking for a long time a good way of losing weight? Look at it this way: the direct effect is that calories are burnt over that period, and you will by using your fat stores for fuel because it is aerobic exercise. So that’s a positive: you’re burning calories, and as long as you don’t eat too much food, you’re losing weight. But what will be the adaptation? You’re telling your body that you will need to walk for a long amount of time to find food. So, how will your body adapt to make you a better walker? Expending energy faster? Burning fat easily? NO WAY. If you need to walk through the savanna for a long time, you want your body to conserve as much energy (fat) as possible and retain as much water as possible. This is the opposite of your goal, you will not lose weight in the long-term, so it is not an optimal solution. Sprinting What about high-intensity exercise? The immediate effect is to burn calories in your blood, but there isn’t enough time to start burning fat. Your muscles may burn with lactic acid, and you can’t keep it up for very long. That isn’t too good, because you won’t burn as many calories as you did walking. But is the adaptation going in the correct direction? Your body will try to make you a better runner by making calories available to you at a moment’s notice to fuel your run (burning fat faster), and will try to get rid of the fat that is slowing you down. This is a great adaptation. The best advice regarding exercise for weight loss in accordance with adaptation is this: warm up by doing a fast walk for 10-15 minutes, so that your body goes into a fat-burning mode. Then, turn up the intensity as high as you can and speed through the next 10-15 minutes. This can be running, climbing stairs, bicycling or whatever activity you like. I recommend a stationary bike because the risk of falling or hurting your joints is minimized. If you do this before breakfast, you’re also training your body to use stored energy (fat) instead of energy from food in your stomach. If You Could Be an Animal… If your physique could resemble an animal’s, which animal would you choose? Try to ignore symbolism, and just pick an animal whose body composition you’d like to approach. Many men would choose a lion and many women would choose a gazelle. These animals have adapted to get the bodies they have, and their adaptation, like yours, is based on how they behave day to day. So how do these animals behave? We can’t compare their diets, because a gazelle is a herbivore, a lion is a carnivore, and humans are omnivores. However, we can look at their exercise needs. A lion, to get food, has to sprint for up to 5 minutes until it grabs its prey, which is usually pretty big. When it does, it wrestles with it for up to 10 minutes, flexing all its muscles and changing positions, putting all its force against the other animal that is resisting with all its might. This builds muscular strength and size and eliminates body fat. A gazelle spends a lot of time eating, but each mouthful is tiny. It takes a long time to eat, and never gorges. When the grass all around it is bare, it bounces off to another place to find food or water. The gazelle is highly alert because it is vulnerable to attack, and often twitches or fidgets to make sure it can escape quickly. When it is attacked, it runs (bounces) incredibly fast for up to 20 minutes until it is safely out of danger. This activity makes it long and slender as an adaptation to its environment. Don’t be a house cat. Many cats are overweight because their environment doesn’t challenge them to run to catch food (or avoid being caught), and sleep or lie around for 18 hours a day. If you have a desk-job, and then watch TV on the couch, that is exactly what you are doing. Three Squares Should you eat only three meals a day and avoid snacking to lose weight? Well, you will be consuming fewer calories, so that’s a plus. However, the bigger effect is this: your body will think food is rare and that you may starve. If you go 5 or 6 hours between meals, or if you skip breakfast and go 16 hours or so without food, what else could your body possibly conclude? Your brain can’t tell your cells “don’t worry, we’re trying to lose weight,” because your intentions don’t mean anything to your organs. Your organs react and adapt to the stimuli presented to them. So they think that you’re in the desert. How do you survive in the desert? Like a camel: Conserve as much food in your body as possible (fat), slow your metabolism to prolong your life (so you’ll feel tired a lot), and retain as much water as possible. What about the opposite? What if you eat small portions every two hours and drink water all the time? Your body will think that you’re in a place where there is food whenever you need it, like a jungle full of fruit trees and other easily furnished food to eat. What is the reaction? Hooray! Better to speed up the metabolism, so that the stomach is finished digesting the previous meal before the next one comes; no need to store fat that is just leeching circulation and water; and get rid of any excess water in the system, because fresh water is constantly coming in. This is in line with your weight loss goals, so this is the route to take. Calories: Eat less or burn more? The final effect of your body’s great adaptation potential is the question of which is more effective: eating fewer calories or burning more calories with exercise? Let’s look at these two propositions in terms of adaptation. If you first remove a significant number of calories from your diet, you will feel less energetic (because calories are energy), therefore, you won’t feel like exercising, and you won’t be able to exercise for as long. On the other hand, if you start exercising more each day, it will make you hungrier (because your body knows it’s not getting enough calories to support this new activity), but as long as you try to keep your eating habits the same and pay attention to satiety by eating foods that make you feel full, you’ll feel great, your endurance will improve and your overall health will keep getting better. At that point, if you reduce the calories in your diet, then you will be able to cope with slightly less energy, because your body will already be more efficient at using that energy to fuel your exercise. A Summary To conclude, in terms of exercise: warm up to get the circulation going with a fast walk for about 20 minutes, then do a high intensity activity for about 10 minutes. The best to do that is before breakfast. In terms of diet: try to reduce your calories overall, but divide them among small meals all day. Never eat a big meal, but snack every hour or two on something healthy. Also, drink as much water as you possibly can all day. These practices are optimized for your body’s natural reactions, so that you will be training your body to lose weight. The American Heart Association has announced obesity a dangerous epidemic and a major risk for heart disease. More than 70% of US adults are overweight and that figure is rapidly increasing. But by following three simple steps in your everyday life you do not have to become one of the above statistics. They are easy to follow without time constraints and don’t require a complete lifestyle change. These three steps are: 1. Strength Training - Nowadays you do not have to live in a gym to put on functional muscle. Short High Intensity sessions performed once a week is all that is required to elevate the metabolism for total fat burning. 2. A Small Decrease in Daily Calories - Diets don’t work (everybody knows this by now) but by decreasing your daily calories by a small amount, the weight loss is body fat alone and not lean tissue and water that is associated with crash diets. Remember fat accumulates on the body over a long period of time so it must come off slowly. 3. More Incidental Activity - Instead of driving try walking, walk instead of taking elevators or escalators; take the stairs and so on. Just keep moving through out the day. Lets have a look at the Three Steps in more detail below: Strength Training Between the ages of 20 and 70 the average person loses one quarter of their muscle mass. Running, cycling or other aerobic sports will not prevent this loss. This is very disturbing because the muscles are the engines of the body and every pound of muscle burns 100 calories every day. By adding just 10 pounds of functional muscle to your body, you will burn off 60 pounds of fat over the next year. Providing you take in the same amount of calories, it will keep burning those extra pounds year after year! The amount of fat the body can burn is directly related to the lean muscle your body has. If you don’t perform weight training to maintain your muscle tissue, you will lose half a pound of the fat burning tissue per year after the age of 20 years. In simpler terms the more functional muscle you have on your body the more fat you will burn up. Small Decrease in Daily Calories For years now, we have been told to use dieting to rid the excess fat from our bodies. The trouble with this concept is that the low calorie restricted diet would throw the body into starvation mode, with the body holding onto the fat and using precious muscle tissue for energy. This would then lower the metabolism causing greater muscle loss and when the diet is broken the unwanted fat would not only return but actually increase because to the lowered metabolism. The way around this is to cut your daily calorie intake by a small amount of calories only. This will stop any starvation mechanisms from clicking in. You can do this by making up a seven day eating plan and writing down every thing you eat for the week, and then work out the calories you have eaten with a calorie counter. Divide this figure by seven and you have your daily calorie value. Decrease daily calorie value by a couple of hundred calories per day and no more. This will generate slow weight loss and the majority will be fat loss only. The daily calories should be consumed during the day with small frequent meals. The calories should come from a balanced diet (no fad diets please) with the required amount of micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. As well as containing the required amounts of fibre, fat, protein and carbohydrates. More Incidental Activity Fat is burned from the body when cells oxidize to release energy in the form of exercise. When the exercise is done slowly to moderately then the majority of energy is taken from the fat stores. The key to effective aerobic training that burns off maximum fat is long-term consistency not intensity. It doesn’t matter if you run a mile, jog a mile or walk a mile you will burn exactly the same amount of calories. The best exercise by far for the purpose of fat-loss is fast walking either indoors on the treadmill or outdoors. Other aerobic activities are the treadmill, bike, climber or any other training gear found in or out of the Gym. Start with 100 minutes of controlled incidental activity per week increasing this to 200 minutes a week or more. In all other activities try to move, move, move. Try parking the car further away from your destination so you can walk the extra distance, hide all your remote controls so you have to get up and change the channels manually. These all help burn those extra calories and body fat from your frame. So go ahead, by incorporating these three simple fat loss steps into your everyday life you will not have to change your lifestyle or be subject to time constraints.
