How To Set Up A Freshwater Fish Aquarium

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

By Keith Londrie Equipment you will need: Aquarium, Aquarium gravel, Aquarium filter, Replacement filter media, Heater, Other decorations (such as fake or real plants), Aquarium test kits to test water parameters and monitor the infamous aquarium nitrogen cycle, Fish food, Aquarium vacuum, Fish net, Aquarium Glass Scrubber, 5-gallon bucket, Pasta strainer, Realize the responsibility involved. Learning how to set up a fish tank is not all that difficult, but there are some steps you should follow. First, you must realize a few things about an aquarium setup. A tropical fish tank is just like having a dog or a cat when it comes to the amount of effort on your part. In order to have a successful freshwater tropical fish tank you will have to work at it. Once a week, or at most once every two weeks, you will need to perform some kind of maintenance on the tank. Most of the time you will be performing water changes. You will also have to feed your fish at least once a day. If you are up to the challenge, please proceed! Decide on an aquarium size. It’s a good idea to have in mind what kind of fish you want to keep before you purchase an aquarium. Some fish only grow to be an inch or two, whereas other types of tropical fish can grow 12 or 13 inches or more in length! Knowing what kind of fish you want will help you decide the size of the tank they will need. If this is your first time with an aquarium, it may be a good idea to start with a 10 or 20 gallon aquarium setup for now and stock it with some smaller and hardier species. Decide on the aquarium’s location. Place your aquarium in an area where the light and temperature of the tank won’t be affected by external sources such as windows and heater vents. Sunlight that enters the room through an unshaded window could affect the temperature of your tank. This could also lead to green algae problems for your tank down the road. You will want to place your aquarium on a stand that will be able to hold its total weight. You also want to be sure that the floor is able to support the total weight of the aquarium and stand. A good rule of thumb for determining the total weight of a full aquarium is 10 pounds per gallon of water. For example, a 55-gallon tank will weigh approximately 550 pounds when filled with water! Buy your aquarium and equipment. Now is a good time to decide on the type of aquarium filter you will want to use. You will also need to purchase a heater capable of heating the tank size you have. Buy the gravel, plants, a power strip and other decorations. A good rule of thumb for the amount of gravel that you will need is 1 to 1.5 pounds of gravel per gallon of water. Set up your aquarium and stand. Wash out your tank with water only! Do not use soap or detergents. Soap residue left behind will be harmful for your tropical fish. If you are going to use an under gravel filter (not recommended) now would be the time to set it up as well. Wash Gravel, plants and decorations. Be sure to wash the gravel thoroughly before adding it to your tank. An easy way to do this is to put some of the rocks in a pasta strainer and wash them out in your bath tub. Then place the clean gravel in a clean 5-gallon bucket for transport to the aquarium. After adding the gravel you can place your plants and decorations. Add water to the aquarium. To avoid messing up your gravel and plants, you can place a plate or saucer in the middle of your aquarium and direct the water flow onto the plate. Use room temperature water when filling. To remove the chlorine and chloramine, use something like Tetra AquaSafe for Aquariums. Don’t completely fill up the aquarium until you are sure of the layout of your decorations. Otherwise, when you place your arm in to move stuff around water is going to spill over. Doh! Set up equipment. Install your heater but don’t plug it in until the thermostat in the heater has adjusted to the water temperature. This usually takes about 15 minutes or so. Hook up your filter and any other equipment you have, then top off the aquarium water to just under the hood lip. Place your hood and tank light on the aquarium and then check your power cords to be sure that they are free of water. I would also recommend using a drip loop on all of the power cords to be extra cautious. For more information on safety, read this great article on aquarium electrical safety. Plug all of the equipment into a power strip and then “turn on” the aquarium. Wait, wait, wait and then wait some more. I know, you want to add some fish. But, in order to do this right you must wait until your aquarium has cycled before adding any fish. There are ways of speeding up this process. Check out the nitrogen cycle to learn more about starting the nitrogen cycle and how to speed it up. If you must use fish to cycle, try to get a hardier species like the zebra danio or cherry barb. You may notice your fish tank cycle kicking in gear if you start to get some white cloudy aquarium water after a few days. Add tropical fish. Only add one or two fish at a time. Adding a couple fish at a time gives your filtration system the time needed to take on the increased biological load that the new fish introduce. When you bring the fish home let the bag float in the tank for about 15 minutes so that the fish can become acclimated to the temperature and pH of the aquarium water. After 5 minutes of floating the bag you should add some of the aquarium water to the bag so that the fish can become acclimated to the pH level in the aquarium. This will help reduce the amount of stress imposed on the fish. Stressed fish often leads to dead or diseased fish! Don’t feed your fish on the first day. They probably wouldn’t eat any food on the first day anyway. Let them get acquainted with their new home. Get ready for regular maintenance. Be prepared to spend some time once every week or two to clean your tank. Performing regular water changes will reduce the nitrate levels and keep your tropical fish happy and healthy. As you can see, the steps for how to set up a fish tank are not that complex and hopefully you now have your aquarium setup and running! Have fun, take care of and enjoy your fish! Safeguarding Your Customers’ Private Information

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By Robin Gronsky In 1999, Congress passed the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act which required all mortgage brokers and lenders (as well as other financial Institutions) to do three things: (1) they had to securely store the private information that they received from their customers; (2) they had to provide notice to their customers that described their policies about sharing individuals personal information with third parties; and (3) they had to provide a mechanism (an opt-out) by which the customer could restrict the mortgage broker/lender from sharing his personal data. The size of the company did not matter. Even a tiny company was subject to compliance with this law. So, you started sending out privacy notices with the Good Faith Estimates and thought you were done with compliance of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. But those privacy notices were only the first of two regulatory schemes that the Federal Trade Commission was required to implement. The next set of regulations became effective on May 23, 2003. How do you comply with the Safeguard Rule? You must develop, implement, and maintain a written security program to safeguard your applicants personal information. Heres what you need to do:  Assign one person to be in charge of the information safeguard program in your company.  Identify foreseeable risks to the security and confidentiality of applicants private information to prevent the misuse, theft or disclose of that information.  Assess the safeguards you have already implemented to control the risks to security. Look at your companys employee training, storage of information, destruction of information, prevention of hacking into your computers and system failures.  Design and implement information safeguards to limit the risks you have identified in all areas of your operations.  You must test your safeguards to ensure that they work properly.  Use only those suppliers that also maintain proper safeguards for your customers private information.  Put all of the safeguards you have implemented into a written plan and review the plan periodically. The plan does not have to be complex, especially if you are a small company. The requirements are a little bit flexible. Compliance with the Safeguards Rule isnt only the law. Its good business sense. Identity theft is a huge problem and growing larger every day. Consumers will want to deal only with those companies who can promise that their confidential personal information will be kept safe. Robin M. Gronsky has been practicing law since 1982. The Basic Notary Supply List

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Keller Hawthorne Once you have become a registered Notary Public, you will need to determine exactly what tools of the trade you require. Unlike many other professions, you wont need a lot of materials to complete your tasks. Most of the materials that you will need come in the form of information and/or education. To determine exactly what you may need, you must first determine what type of Notary services you will provide. There are different forms of Notary Publics and each has different needs. Some may be able to handle property or medical issues. A Mobile Notary will probably require portable tools. Necessary materials may include certain information related to corporation setup, share holder stock certificate information, or seals for corporate companies. As youre surfing the web today, you could easily find thousands of articles or websites that pertain to notaries or Notary supplies. There are many corporate kits available now for someone to set up a limited liability company, non-profit organization, etc. In many common Notary tool kits, you will find Notary journals, acknowledgement forms, stamps, inkless fingerprinting devices, recession calendars (loan officers), identification cards, and websites. Tax information, planning issues, hiring information and techniques, IRS help lines and tax filing tools may also be items to consider. Beginner kits are highly recommended until you get used to what supplies you need to have and which ones you can do without. Below, you will find a list of guidelines for basic and essential supplies. - Keep yourself organized with a Notary journal or Notary receipt book. - In the event of a mistake, you may want to protect yourself with an Errors and Omissions Insurance Policy. - To make sure your Notary certificates comply with state law wording requirements, consider investing in Ordinary Acknowledgments or Jurat with Affiant Statements that are created specifically for your state of residence and business. - Its always a good idea to be aware of new and already in place state laws. Consider investing in an online subscription or book that contains unauthorized practices and other case materials for notaries. - The last thing you want is to be in the presence of a current or potential customer and not have business cards on hand. It is now easier than ever to order low-cost business cards online. - Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington are a few states that require the posting of fee schedules. Look into your states requirements for further information. You can find Notary fee schedules online for around $10. - For even more information on the specific supply requirements your state has, invest in a Notary reference manual that details US state requirements. - There are a number of seals on the market today, including motorized, pocket, and desk seals. Each one of these requires different inks, power, and space. Some of the electric seals offer between 20,000-200,000 impressions per lifetime. You may be tempted to go fancy at first, but first consider whether or not you will need a portable stamp (mobile notaries). Stamps are relatively cheap ranging from $8-$50. Always make sure that you have done your homework prior to making a purchase Check on state requirements and be true to any budget youve put in place. These will be your tools of the trade and you will utilize them in your everyday business. Using Cocky And Funny Online To Attract Women

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

By Teddy Shabba Cocky and funny is a way in which men essentially show women that they are talking to that they are comfortable around women. However, what a lot of guys are doing is trying to be cocky and funny with women online that they just met. The biggest problem with being cocky and funny online is most guys who are using it online are using it in one of two ways. With women who are on online dating sitesWith women they met in person but didn’t have the balls to at least get or call her phone number. The problem with using cocky and funny with women who are on online dating sites is she can take whatever you said either way. If she thinks you are serious she is going to be pissed and end your chances of meeting her. If she thinks you are funny there can be nothing cocky about it because it is online and there is little risk involved. More importantly, the only thing you should be doing with a woman online is getting a way to contact her offline. The problem with using cocky and funny with women you met in person but didn’t have the balls to at least get or call her phone number is you are going backwards in the whole attraction/seduction process. You already told her you were uncomfortable around women when you asked for or accepted her email as her primary contact information. In other words, she already knows that in person you are anything but comfortable around women. In the end, as always online chatting or emailing with women only should be used to get her offline and being cock and funny is an unnecessary and risky step online. IELTS

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Sharon White IELTS was designed due to the great demand of English for those who are willing to learn academic courses in Britain. International students were difficult to define the level of their knowledge so that they could be chosen for definite courses with special curriculum and qualifications. Moreover, it was the need to qualify the level of students English by those organizations which could influence other educational institutions and be respectful and reliable sources. The educational department of the British Council developed the general testing system which would meet British colleges requirements and could objectively assess the English level of international students. The system was so qualitatively developed that European educational institutions began recognizing it as the reliable and complete information about international students knowledge of English. Nowadays thousands of international students pass IELTS annually in order to be assessed by European colleges and universities and be able to enter them for study. Now IELTS is managed by the British Council together with the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate and IDP Education Australia. IELTS is accepted by most British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and some European academic institutions. Many professional organizations and employers accept IELTS now. EILTS consists of four modules of Listening, Reading, writing and Speaking. Each module has its scores and time frames, but generally the whole exam takes about three hours. Reading and writing modules have also two levels of complication, they are academic and general training. General training level is mostly applied by immigrants who want to move for living and need broad knowledge in social sphere. Academic level is required for those who are moving to study at graduate or postgraduate level and, therefore are willing to get an academic degree. Stylish Plus Size Prom Dress for Your Big Night

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

By Rob Buenaventura Plus sized girls used to have to stay home for prom, or if they went, they were doomed to wear unattractive dresses in loud prints or grandma styles. The fashion industry is starting to wise up, though. They’re realizing that curvy girls have a right to be beautiful and enjoy their prom night as much as the skinny ones. If you know where to shop, you can get a flattering, well-fitted prom dress that will make you feel like a queen. Special websites and prom dress retailers offer gowns for girls up to size 44, so you’ll always find something in your size. One in five teens is a plus size now, and you deserve a great prom night, wearing a beautiful dress. The first step to getting a flattering look is to consider your figure. The dress that looks great on a tiny classmate with no curves is going to bunch and look unflattering if you have them. Shop styles designed with your body in mind, not just sized up from the standard line. If you know what sort of shape flatters your body, you can get the best dress for your prom. Apple shapes look good in empire styles. Hourglasses are flattered by styles with a definite waist, but not by straight sheath shapes. Pear shapes do well in dresses with full skirts that flare from the hips. If you’re small busted, consider a dress with decoration at the top to draw attention to your upper half. If, on the other hand, you’d prefer to minimize your bust, avoid things like bugle- beaded and plunging necklines. To ensure the success of your prom look, make sure you’re wearing the right foundation garments. A badly fitted bra or a visible panty line can spoil an otherwise great look. Consult with salespeople to find out what’s best for you. At specialty shops, you can be measured for a bra that will fit and flatter, unlike most of the regular lines. This way, your dress will fit right over a solid foundation that smooths out your lumps and bumps, leaving only beautiful curves. Draw attention to your best features with a flattering gown that goes with your shape, and wear the right foundation, and you’ll get a great look. Don’t skimp on your makeup and hair. The right hairstyle can make you glamorous. The wrong one can add fullness to your face and draw attention just where you don’t want it. Consult with your stylist about what hairstyle will go best with your dress. Updos this year are tending towards messy, rather than severe. Little tendrils trailing out of your style can give it a fun, casual look. Always pick a style that goes with the mood you want to project, though. If you take care to think about your look and how it will go with your body, you’ll get the glamorous prom look girls dream of. Plus size girls don’t have to be content with frumpy dresses for prom. Choose your best look at a specialty prom retailer. Deciding on Your Career?

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Alice Yeats Im a typical generation Y child. I started a degree when I finished school, thinking that it was just the next step in life.Having only completed a year, I was stuck with so many decisions and had no idea what to do next. So I did what most gen Y kids do: I took a year off and headed overseas. I knew from that point on that it wasnt going to be easy finding the perfect career. I enjoyed being free and independent and hated the thought of feeling trapped in the corporate world. I attempted another degree, this time in forensic biology. I found this truly amazing but discovered that this degree would only really fascinate me in theory, and not in practice. After finishing my degree I was still unsure of which path to take and still yearned for the freedom to travel. Last year I decided to move down to Thredbo for a snowboarding season and worked at one of the bars there. This lifestyle gave me the chance to discover what I really wanted out of life. I decided from then on that I would set myself a four-year success plan, rather than locking myself into a nine-to-five career that would see me living from pay to pay. All I needed was an opportunity to earn enough money to go traveling whenever I wanted, and live the lifestyle I only dreamed about. This is when I came across a home-based business opportunity that allowed me to work as little or as much as I liked. This was exactly what I had been waiting for. I now know that in four years time, I will be financially secure and able to have the lifestyle I want, forever. Alice currently works part-time from home on her 60-minute business venture to create her dream. Are there Only Nine Commandments?

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

By Debra Lohrere One of the most controversial subjects among Christians today, is whether or not the Ten Commandments are still valid today. While many concede that Nine of them are still valid, but the 4th one concerning keeping of the Sabbath on the day ordained and sanctified by God is no longer necessary, some even go as far as to say that all Ten have been abolished and that we are now Under Grace not the Law. How do these view points line up biblically? Perhaps the best place to start is at the very beginning. After all it was at the time of creation that God implemented the Sabbath day, as a memorial to his wondrous work. The bible says, Gen 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. When Moses was given the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, the fourth Commandment was written stating Exo 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Using the word remember reiterated the fact that the Sabbath was already in existence, it was not created when the Ten Commandments were written as many seem to think. What the people who are today of the view that none of the Commandments are valid anymore seem to fail to recognize is the fact that they are all about Love. The first four show us how to love God, and the last six how to love our fellow man. For those who have forgotten them, here is a quick rundown of the Ten Commandments: 1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. 3. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 5. Honour thy father and thy mother. 6. Thou shalt not kill. 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. 8. Thou shalt not steal. 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s. It is easy to see from looking at these Commandments that they were all implemented for our own benefit. They show so beautifully how we should treat God (with all reverence and love) and how we should treat everyone else. How much better and safer would this world be if everyone obeyed these wonderful rules? There would be no more murders, rapes, robberies, unwanted pregnancies etc. To obey these Commandments is the real test of our love for God. This is why they are so necessary in the experience of a true believer. Jam 2:20 “Faith without works is dead.” Jesus said, Mat 7:21 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”. Words and profession are not enough. The true evidence is our obedience. I think the strongest evidence there is about the validity today of these Commandments is the words of our Lord Jesus himself. He said, John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” One of the most powerful texts in the Bible on this subject is found in 1 John 2:4. “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” John could write this with such assurance because it is one of the most deeply established truths in the Bible. Jesus spoke of those who said, “Lord, Lord,” but did not do the will of the Father. He then described many who would seek entrance to the kingdom claiming to be workers of miracles in the name of Christ. But He would sorrowfully have to say, Mat 7:21-23. “I never knew you: depart from me.” This is serious because Jesus is saying is Not everyone who calls me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven. Gods grace does not cover deliberate disobedience, because this shows that there was no genuine repentance of our sinful act, because had there been, we would not have kept on doing it. To know Christ is to love Him, and to love Him is to obey Him. The valid assumption of the Bible writers is quite clear and simple: If you are not obeying Christ, you dont love Christ. And if you dont love the Master, then you dont know Him. So we can see that knowing and loving and obeying are all tied closely together and are absolutely inseparable in the life of God’s faithful people. The beloved John summed it up in these words: 1 John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” All Bible references are from the King James Version.
