Praying Hands - Are You Using Yours Correctly?

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By David Hopkins Do you find prayer intimidating? Have you ever said,”I don’t know how to pray”? If so, you may besurprised to learn that there is no “right” or “wrong”method of prayer. Nor is prayer reserved for a handfulof religious professionals. Prayer is the act of offering reverent petition to Godand an expression of the commitment and trust we havein God by faith. Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter intothy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray tothy Father which is in secret; and thy Father whichseeth in secret shall reward thee openly. When we come before God in prayer and give Him fullcontrol of a situation, we are acknowledging Hisability to bring about a change in that area of our orsomeone elses life. Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall askin prayer, believing, ye shall receive. As a result, God begins to work on the problem withHis all mighty, all knowing, everlasting power. Over the years prayer has not received the recognitionthat it deserves. Many people feel since God already knows about ourneeds, there isn’t any need to tell God about them. This could turn out to be a very costly mistake! While it’s true God knows about and is involved inevery area of our life, its also true He wants us tospecifically commit each of our concerns to Him sothat we will learn to depend on Him and His counsel. Perhaps you sometimes feel you have no one to turn towith your stress and struggles. It is not just a matter of having someone tounderstand, but of finding someone you can trust. But you can find reassurance in the fact that Godremains in control and takes care of His faithfulchildren. Prayer is one of the greatest contributions we canmake to improve our lives as well as the lives ofothers. Just pray, offering whatever you’re thinking andfeeling to the Lord. Whatever you bring, it’s a start. As you pray more regularly or more often, the usualexperience is that you start being more truthful inprayer, you start turning away from what you didwrong, your attitude becomes more confident, you starttaking the time to listen, you start looking for thesigns of divine response in your daily life, you starthungering to read the Scriptures, you start wanting topray with others, and you think less and less aboutyourself. You will soon find preparations and practices that mayhelp you be more open to God in prayer as you startletting the Holy Spirit change you. When we come in prayer we come as we are Sometimesscared, Sometimes needy, Sometimes empty, Sometimesbored, Sometimes furious, but we come. We come trusting that through prayer God can changeus, and can change the things that happen in our life. We come trusting that God is with us and builds us up,that the Holy Spirit prays with us and for us. We trust that the Lord will lead us to lose our anger, lead us to repentance, lead us to being open to theSpirit’s voice, and lead us to love of God and of eachother. If you feel like a victim, you can pray to God,instead of irresponsibly allowing the circumstances oflife to overwhelm you. You can begin to take charge ofyour life by asking God for the power to make changes. Or maybe you live with unchangeable circumstances thateffect your life in a major way. From finding a spouse, to finding a job, from buildinga business, to building a life, People frequently prayfor God to bless their efforts with success and in asuccess driven society, people of faith often strugglewith the place and pursuit of success. Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer andsupplication in the Spirit, and watching thereuntowith all perseverance and supplication for all saints; God is more than ready to hear our complaints, appeals, desires and frustrations. Nothing is too bigor too small for the Lord not to take intoconsideration. Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving letyour requests be made known unto God. In closing I’ll leave you with Jesus’ instructions onprayer to His disciples. Matthew 6:9-13 After this manner therefore pray ye:Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it isin heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Andforgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Andlead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and theglory, for ever. Amen. Wedding Day Budget Planning

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Yolanda Nash So your having a wedding do you have any idea of how much your wedding will cost? Well I have put together a general price list of an average wedding for the year 2005. On the average a wedding will vary in cost cost by your location, wedding vendors, bridal accessories, and wedding favors. To get a more exact cost of an average wedding do a vendor price search on the internet, search wedding forums and ask local wedding planners. Once you have a good idea of the average price make a note of it because it will surely come in handy when figuring in your budget. Once you have your budget figured out then start putting money back every week or whenever you get paid until your wedding day. Make sure you put back a little extra money just in case of emergencies because you really never know what might happen. Wedding day transportation (Limousine, Horse Carriage, cabs etc.) $ 450.00 Flowers and decorations up to $ 1000.00 Photography $ 500.00 - $ 3,500 Videography $ 800.00 - $ 1,700 Wedding Rings up to $ 1500.00 Engagement Ring $ 1,000.00- 5,000.00 Reception entertainment (DJ, Band, Etc.) $ 900.00 - $ 1,500 Officiant, church or ceremony site up to $ 1000.00 Wedding favors up to $ 400.00 Invitations, Announcements and Thank You Notes $ 350.00 - $500 Rehearsal Dinner $ 1000.00 Wedding Gown $ 300.00 - $3000.00 Bridal Veil & Tiara up to $ 200.00 Bridesmaids’ dresses (for 6 bridesmaids) $ 1200.00 Mother of the Bride’s dress up to $ 900.00 Groom’s Rental Tuxedo up to $ 500.00 Groomsmen Rental Tuxedos (for 6 groomsmen) $ 600.00 Wedding Reception (Caterer, Wedding Cake, Reception hall , Etc.) $ 1000.00-$ 8,000.00 Honeymoon destination up to $ 6,000 Out of town guests transportation up to $ 300.00 GRAND TOTAL $ 20,000 - $ 25,000 This is just an example list of some of the fees you will incur before and after your wedding. Weaving - Where Would We Be Without It?

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Bill Kernodle As far back as there is evidence of human life, there is weaving. Due to the fragile nature of hand made textiles, the surviving fabrics from the past are sometimes few. What we can see are astounding objects of art, beauty and fascination that will be with us forever. Some textiles have survived, however in the frozen parts of the earth, in bogs or in tombs such as in Ancient Egypt. What drove these primitive peoples to use weaving? Probably the most basic needs of shelter and survival were the first motivators for ancient weavers. One can imagine the primitive man fashioning a shelter for the night by laying reeds and branches on some sort of a crude structure. Perhaps he observed the intricate pattern of a spider’s web for his inspiration or a beaver’s dam. In any case man has always been a weaver. Weaving as we know it today is best described by inter-lacing, usually at right angles, two sets of threads to form cloth, a rug or other types of woven textiles. Today of course this process is for the most part automated and mass produced, but the quality and the allure of hand made, hand woven rugs and clothing is never ending. The earliest weaving produced blankets, rugs, baskets, nets for fishing and many others. You can see the full impact of weaving when you consider these products and how we use them today and take for granted their evolution and usefulness. Weaving clothes kept the people warm and provided floor coverings as well as baskets to carry food. Where would we be without weaving? I dare say a lot worse off. As weaving grew in sophistication, from the crudest of shelters and utilitarian items, came man’s natural inclination to insert, if you will, his innate creativity into the items he was weaving. I still look at some ancient (and not so ancient) rugs and wonder, How do they do that? How did they ever think of that? Don’t you? Some motifs and designs in textiles from primitive peoples are from the natural world and represent their pagan beliefs or items found in nature, the animals they hunted or the God (or Gods) they worshipped. Also due to this desire for creativity came the process of dyeing and weaving with colors. If weaving was for strictly utilitarian purposes, there would be no reason to have different colors or to go to the very long and arduous process of dyeing wool and cotton. Textiles may be made from many materials, animal, plant, mineral or synthetic. In the beginning all sources were from natural sources and indeed the best textiles are today still produced from wool, cotton, silk or other natural materials. No rug, for example is considered a true “oriental” or “Persian” rug unless it is made from wool, cotton or silk. Today we have synthetic fibers, synthetic dyes and automated processes which make the fabric, rug or cloth more affordable, to be sure, but usually lacking in quality. Man has not improved upon the process in thousands of years. Weaving survives the ravages of time. Weaving, Rugs, Antiques, Rug Care. Enjoy the Mystery of the Past. http://www.revelationimports.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Bill_Kernodle http://EzineArticles.com/?Weaving—Where-Would-We-Be-Without-It?&id=346078 buy phentermine with no rx phentermine online free shipping phentermine no prior prescription required phentermine w out prescription

Essential Lavender Oil: What Are Its Benefits?

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Kerris Samson Many people are now finding the use of essential lavender oil whilst at work, helps them to handle the stress of the workplace as well as helping them to relax under pressure and also making them focus better on the tasks at hand. In studies undertaken it was found that participants relaxed considerably better when using lavender aromatherapy and were able to focus better on problems which needed solving. However, although they seemed to be slower in carry out a maths calculation, there were fewer errors in the answers provided. By placing a sprig of lavender or a bowl of potpourri on even a few drops of essential lavender oil when placed near a heat source will help the person to relax, become focused and thus more productive at their job. So if you should happen to work in a hectic office environment then either a lavender body mist or a small vial of lavender essential oil that you are able to keep close by may just help you. Although lavender is not a cure or even an effective treatment for depression, it has been discovered that pain, poor sleep, anxiety and often chronic pain which are often associated with depression can be relieved by the use of this plant. As lavender helps to bring on a natural relaxed state it helps people to cope better with the aggravations that life often throws at us. In a study it was shown that in a normal healthy person the aroma of the lavender oil often has the ability to gently elevate their moods. It does not matter whether you are either currently suffering from depression or just feeling down; remember that the person to discuss about your treatment of your depression is your doctor. Although by taking herbal tea baths and burning lavender candles is part of the regime of taking care of yourself which does not require a prescription, or even cost a great deal of money, a lavender infused bath or lavender body products are able to provide a natural stress reducer, which can not only lift mild depression and clear the mind, which enable us to work through the problems we are experiencing more effectively. Another good use for lavender is to help fight against insomnia. Many people find that if they suffer from insomnia or are frequently awake during the night, that they have difficulty coping with the following day to day matters. Lavender scent not only helps to promote relaxation in a person, but it also helps them to sleep better. In studies carried out at hospitals and nursing homes it was that patients who were exposed to the smell of lavender fell asleep, not only quicker but stayed asleep for longer and slept much more deeply. Certainly, it is know that poor sleep is one of the causes that many people wake up with a headache in the morning and in some cases can even initiate a migraine attack. You will find that the common causes related to a morning headache are the grinding of teeth and the muscles tensing around the face and neck. By keeping a small bowl of lavender in your bedroom and a light misting on your pillow, you find that this will help you to relax easier before you fall asleep each night. Another suitable use for lavender is to help relieve anxiety which many people are now suffering from. Anxiety is usually found to express itself as racing thoughts and a pounding heartbeat, but one of the first signs of any form of anxiety is for the person not to be able to think clearly. The mental stress that many people are feeling now days inevitably causes the mind to become cloudy and people find it difficult to solve lifes little problems, which in turn only increases the anxiety the person is feeling. A by using essential lavender oil, you are helping yourself to relax and take away the pressures that you are feeling and thus alleviating the feeling of anxiety. Finally you can use essential lavender oil to help alleviate the causes that trigger such things as headaches or even chronic pain, which usually are caused by poor sleep, muscle tension, depression, dehydration, poor nutrition, imbalance of hormones, immune deficiency or even just poor coping skills with every day life. Men - The Two Types of Relationships That Will Make You Truly Happy

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Teddy Shabba When it comes to relationships in order for a man to be truly happy it needs to fall under 1 of 2 categories. 1. Male Dominated- Man Controls Pretty Much Everything 2. She Controls Herself/He Controls Himself Anything else and you will have a man that is unhappy and has chosen to accept his new place in life. Now I know some of you might be thinking about equality in a relationship, however, equality in any relationship leads to either conflict or the 2nd category mentioned above. While it is true that a relationship can be female dominated and have a man truly be happy. It is usually because the woman has done an excellent job in making it appear as if the relationship is actually male dominated. As a dating coach for men it is my goal to lead all men to realize that the 2nd type of category is the best place to be at with a woman. It is true Love of oneself and finding a woman who has true Love of herself and feeling a powerful connection between the two. However it could take a lifetime just to master loving yourself let alone finding someone else. That’s where the 1st category comes into play as a dating coach it easy for me to get a man at a point where he knows that he deserves beautiful women in his life and also has the ability to know how to attract these types of women as well. In turn he knows that he doesn’t have to put up with a woman disrespecting or not treating him the way he deserves because he knows that he can do better; and find a woman who will treat him the way he deserves. If you are a man and find yourself in a relationship right now in which you are no happy in or feel as if you have little or no control in it. Realize that you do not have to accept this reality and you can choose instead to find yourself in a relationship in which you are happy and in control. Perhaps with the woman you are seeing now or in the future with a woman you know you deserve. Eyes

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Richard Romando The eyes are the sensors that detect the reflected light from an object, pre-process it into a neuron signal and transmit it to the brain. The brain, after referring to its memory data bank, then identifies the object. The eye is an almost spherical organ, about an inch in diameter, fitted with fatty tissues inside the eye socket of the skull. The sclera is the tough protective outer layer of the eye, which we see as the white of the eyes. The cornea is made of transparent, strong and smooth material that covers the colored portion of the eye. Its semi-spherical shape directs light into the pupil. The iris, the colored portion of the eye, is made of flexible muscles, and the aperture in the center is known as the pupil. The iris muscles contract or expand to different light conditions and determine the size of the pupil. Heredity decides the color of the melanin pigment in the iris. Behind the iris is the lens. The lens focuses the light coming in through the pupil onto the retina by altering its own shape. The retina detects the light, does the initial processing and transmits it to the brain. The eyelids, along with the lacrimal gland (tear gland), protect the eyes from injury, dust, germs and other toxic substances by automatic reflex action. We have two eyes located at a fixed distance apart, so they send two slightly varying signals according to the angle. The brain processes these and arrives at a three-dimensional image. In an inherited condition like myopia, or near-sightedness, the distance between the lens and the retina is more than normal, so the eyes cannot see the distant objects. In the old-age problem of hyperopia, or farsightedness, the eyeball structure alters, the distance between the lens and the retina is reduced and the eyes cannot see close objects. Glasses or contact lenses can correct both these conditions. A cataract is a condition where the lens gets clouded and the vision deteriorates. Surgically replacing the lens with a synthetic lens successfully corrects the problem. Other eye diseases include conjunctivitis, astigmatism, glaucoma, sty, tumors, ectropion and entropion. Simple precautions, such as wearing goggles in dusty areas like workshops and laboratories, and wearing sunglasses when there is harsh sunlight, go a long way in keeping these vital organs functioning smoothly for life. Eyes provides detailed information on Eyes, Dry Eyes, Red Eyes, Puffy Eyes and more. Eyes is affiliated with Eyeglass Lenses. Do You Trust Me?

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By Beverly Anne Sanchez As I left the Tuesday night Bible study that night, I heard the familiar Voice say inside of me -”do you Trust Me?”. Of course Lord, you know I trust you, I answered but not too confidently - I knew from experience that something was up. The Lord was leading but I didn’t know it then. Several months before that night I felt led of the Lord to sign up with a Christian health plan (one of several now in operation) although, of course, mighty woman of faith that I was, I just knew I’d never need it. (Word of Faith movement, you know!) One week after I heard that precious Voice ask that question, hurricane season struck in Miami, Florida. After the first storm came and went, my mother said, “you better clean up the mildew from the sidewalk - it’s dangerous.” But smart me, knowing another storm was following just a couple of days later, I thought to myself, I’ll clean up after the next storm - that way I only clean up once! (Brilliant, I have the Mind of Christ right?) WRONG MOVE! As I was walking too quickly towards the other side of the house, I suddenly felt my feet skid and I knew I was in for a hard fall. As I hit the concrete walkway (both arms extended upward and outward), I didn’t feel any pain but I only heard a strange swoshing sound. I’ll never know how I got up by myself except by angelic support. As I got up on my knees I instinctively cried out - “YOU ARE MY HEALER JESUS!” Then the excrutiating pain hit. Like a small Roman sword stuck in my right shoulder. It was at least 2 days before I went to a hospital. During that time I prayed and prayed and prayed as I didn’t know what hospital or doctor to see. Thank God my Christian health plan gives me the option of choosing whatever hospital or doctor I wanted - (no referrals, no HMO-type system). As I finally received peace in my spirit about going to a particular hospital, I happened to walk into the er when Miami’s very top notch orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Voglino was visiting (God’s split second timing!) A flawless operation even according to the surgeon’s standard. No discoloration, swelling, pain or discomfort whatsoever after the operation. The therapy went flawless also. What a Blessing Lord! THEN CAME THE BILL…OUCH! $22,000.00 FOR JUST ONE AND HALF DAYS! Then, another storm hit, except bigger. My Christian health plan ran into deep trouble due to a horrendous scandal by the founding CEO. Torrid details of course televised by the leading television news magazines out to get anything Christian followed. For a whole year I made credit card payments. Ugh! At least I had excellent credit, some didn’t even have that. There were literally thousands of families, many of them the elderly, stuck in the same predicament. But at least I knew I had heard from the Lord in praying before I signed up in the health plan. The turning point. I went to the park one day to fast and pray and it was at that little park the Lord gave me the specific strategy I needed in order to start getting the finances flowing once again to the other families subscribed in the same health plan. What was the strategy? Well, the Lord instructed me to “give” or “seed” the entire $22,000.00 due me and relinquish it in favor of others receiving their reimbursements for their expenses. In other words, just forget about the money and give it so others could get paid instead. Again, the familiar words, “do you trust me?” Not liking this one at all, but knowing I was hearing from the Lord, I responded, of course I trust you. Then came the breakthrough! The health plan, being full of wonderful dedicated Christian people went to work with prayer and effort and starting paying off all the bills - little by little with a new CEO and board of directors. After a year went by, my Christian health plan paid off all monies to the penny. Yes, even my $22,000.00 which I had given freely to others. Oh, He is an awesome God! Yes, God is my healer and yours also. BUT HE HAS HIS WAY AND TIMING IN HEALING…it’s up to you to build Yourself An Ark! (His particular instructions for your healing and indeed, the financing of the healing if need be should He choose to heal through others), and everything else in your life according to His specifications. Sure, He can and does heal supernaturally in answer to the prayer of faith, the laying on of hands, or going to a healing evangelist meeting. But then, many times He chooses to heal by many different ways - by taking nutritional supplements, by going to a doctor, whichever way He desires…because only He knows the root cause of your health problem AND how to take care of it. Just be sure to follow His instructions for your life according to His Blueprint in every detail and IF YOU NEED TO HAVE HEALING ALONG THE WAY…you’ll come out winning in the end. Yahoo Closes Chat Rooms

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Vena McGrath As a concerned adult who has been involved in online chat for almost six years, I was pleased to see the article regarding the closure of privately owned rooms on Yahoo. My concerns for children and teenagers online have grown over the past years as I have come into contact with people online that I, as a parent, would never have wanted my children to be around, even just on the Internet. The anonymity of the medium is the biggest cause for concern. This is a whole new world, growing everyday, whereby people can meet and chat without ever having eye contact, or the advantage of reading body language. I heard recently a figure of 350 million people entering one particular chat server each month. This is astounding to someone who lives in a country like Australia where there is such a small population compared to the big wide world out there. The fact that you can chat without anyone seeing who you are, also opens a huge window of opportunity for those that get a ‘high’ out of manipulating the minds and emotions of the naive and vulnerable of our society. And the naive and vulnerable probably make up a large proportion of those online, because of the anonymity factor, because of the lack of eye contact, and the lack of body language. These people find it hard to interact in their real lives, and yet online, they come out of themselves because no one is there to make fun of them or deride them. All they need do is hit the X up in the corner and they can move on from perhaps someone who is verbally abusing them in a room, to a safer room. The problem I have with chat rooms is that in spite of a room being labelled ‘teenage’ or a Peers age room, anyone can go into those rooms and do whatever they like in private. I advocate everyone naming the nick in public that comes into a room and starts to click on other nicks for private conversations. And yet, if you do that where I used to chat, you are warned and often kicked out of the room, or you are told to take your problems private. I am strongly in favour of networking to weed out the sleazes from chat, and yet again, this is frowned on. It doesn’t take much nouce to work out that someone who comes into a room only to priv people, comes in with a motive other than pleasant chat with those already in the room. These people should be outlawed. The Australian server I spent my time with quite recently changed their rules regarding room ownership. They opened the chat scene up so that anyone can now own a room, whereas for the first five years or so I chatted in there, you had to apply to open a room and it had to be run on Telstra rules. Chat is dying on that server since they changed the rules; people have moved out of the main rooms into small isolated rooms and the whole concept of chat has changed. This is a shame as chat can be wonderful for many people who don’t look below the surface and see what is beneath that isn’t so good. It can be, and is, a lifeline for many and the demise of the quality of chat is sad. People are wary of entering a room where only one of two others can be seen as often the impression is there is something wrong with the room or the two people are having a private meeting. As in most things, humans like to be around groups where they feel a degree of safety and belonging. Whilst Yahoo is doing the right thing in only having rooms open that they monitor, I must say here that I have only ever visited Yahoo a couple of times, and the language and abuse I saw in the rooms I visited, scared me out very quickly. I can understand from what I saw, why there is now a problem regarding chat rooms for children/teenagers. I don’t see how closing those rooms down will achieve much unless Yahoo are going to instigate hosts into each and every room on Yahoo and run the server with strict rules and guidelines. A room without hosts is a room that can be taken over by unsavoury people and who will police it? Whilst I am not an advocate of heavy handed, control freak hosts, I believe if the owners of chat servers paid people who had qualifications to host rooms, on the proviso they follow the guidelines set down by the server, then things would improve. No one wants to go online and enter a chat room run by a control freak host, but there is a feeling of safety if there is a host in a room. I personally believe all owners of chat servers should be forced to ensure that every chat room in their server is monitored 24×7, or is only allowed to be open during the hours there is a host to monitor the room. I now chat on a new server in Australia and this server has no rules really, just guidelines for safe and decent chat. There are no swear filters like there are in the other Australian server, which is perhaps a mistake as it now opens the door for unsavoury and unnecessary foul language and abuse in those chat rooms. Anyone can open a room and own it, and my friend and I now have four rooms. I have my own room secretslieschat where I advertise my website and my book, two things I couldn’t do on the other server as it was considered I was indulging in free advertising, and we have the Peers50, Peers60 and Peers60+. We took those rooms over from the owners of the server in an effort to get back some decent chat rooms where people will like to chat. It’s early days yet with few visitors, but we have opped ourselves in the rooms and plan to monitor them to try our best to ensure that there is fairness and decency in the rooms. I applaud the efforts of Yahoo. It is good to read that people who can make a difference are now working to do just that. You only have to surf around the Net using a few keywords and you will find many websites dedicated to safety online, to weed out the unsavoury users, to handle issues of abuse, harassment and stalking by using legal options. No matter how many people like to bury their heads in the sand, those that care and are aware know the truth. We have to protect the young because those of us, who have been around the Internet for a while, know that there are things happening online that even adults need to be protected from. If we don’t teach the young the right way to act online, the rules for safety for themselves and their families, then chat will end up destroying itself as a place for enjoyment and companionship for the lonely. All of us who chat learn everyday from those we come in contact with, and the people online can have important rules of life and wisdom they can share. In my own small way I am trying to make a difference too, and will continue to do so. Long live chat. I am an Australian writer, living in Sydney. My first book has been released in the USA titled ‘Secrets, Lies & Chat’ and is the story of my personal experiences from an addiction over a three-year period, to chat online and online dating. I wrote the book with the hope that others would read it and learn from my mistakes. My passion is children online, and the very real dangers I know exist on the Internet that they will undoubtedly, at some time, be exposed to. Dating Advice: Avoid the Blamers and Complainers

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Tonja Weimer Do you ever abandon yourself and get sucked into another’s crisis? Do you take on their miseries like they are your own? If you are single, it is important to be on guard for dates who have a need to blame or complain. They can be quite compelling in their story of sadness and can prevail upon your loving heart. It is important to distinguish between people who have come upon hard times and need a helping hand….from those who lead their life, one crisis to the next, and seem to need their problems to identify them. Be on guard for those who must tell one sad or crazy story after another. If they don’t have something to complain about, they go looking for it. It’s not that we don’t all go through rough times. But these people hang on to them, nurse them, and get mileage out of them. Victims are those who complain all the time that someone or something is blocking their happiness, security, or ability to do what they want or need. They remain in a perpetual state of unhappiness, also keeping those around them in turmoil. They are unknowingly addicted to upset, and it’s always someone else’s fault. If you let yourself become absorbed by their cyclone of misery , you will not be available for the love and relationship you say you want. If you are a caring person who is a good listener, how can you stop a knee-jerk reaction to taking on the problems of victims? * You need reserves. Make sure you have your reserves of energy, money, happiness, and health, well stocked before you extend into another’s territory of trauma. Set some safe limitations on what you can and cannot do. * Assess the situation. Is the person who is having a crisis always in a victim mode? If so, refer them to a coach, counselor, psychologoist, or spiritual adviser. If the person does not want to get help to solve the situation, but instead, wants to put it off on you…beware. * Check your own ego. It may be flattering to be selected as the only person who can help, but you are setting yourself up to being in a quagmire of unsolvable problems. Even if you help the person get one issue resolved, 10 more will appear overnight. * Ask yourself why you need to get involved with a blamer and complainer. One question might be, “What is there in my life that I might be running away from that makes me vulnerable to this person’s plight?” Do you have unresolved conflicts, and being around theirs makes yours seem small…or forgotten? Caring and kind people can become caught in the problems of blamers and complainers, and let themselves be used without realizing that they are not helping the situation…they are contributing to it. Stay present to what is important for you to focus on to make your life fabulous. This is how you attract and find someone wonderful. Someone who does not need to blame and complain. 3 Seldom Used Communication Tips You Can Master: Break Down Barriers Between You & Your Partner

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Melody C According to Rob, (Director/Counsellor of The Centre for Life Management/LMC Relationship Centre, and Co-author of “Love by Design”) says that the following is roughly how communication is divided. 10% of Communication is conducted through Words.30% of Communication is conducted through Tone. 60% of Communication is conducted by Body Language. So what does this mean? We spend the majority of the time focusing on what people are directly saying, but we are missing 90% of what people are really saying. It is no wonder then, that above and beyond couples not having the same communication modes, or not having relationship skills, miscommunication can also be occurring because we are not focusing on the full picture. Indirect Communication is also an alternate form of communication, because a person needs to listen to what is being said underneath the words, and not take the words at face value only. Lets give some examples of the less well know forms of communication. BODY LANGUAGE: When a couple comes for counselling, by the time they sit down on the couch together, we already have an idea of the dynamics of the relationship. How? By how they are sitting on the couch. Is the couple sitting on opposite ends of the couch? Are they sitting close together, are they leaning towards each other, away from each other? Is one couple leaning away from the other even though the other is leaning towards the other one? Is one person practically sitting on the other? Are they holding hands? Does someone have their arm behind the other one? Are they sitting forward, leaning back relaxed, or sitting up poker straight? Is someone fidgeting or restless? Is someone hugging a pillow, or putting a pillow between themselves and their partner? There is a lot going on, if one is aware. It is important when communicating to be aware of ones body language. Often a person may shutdown by something the first partner is saying or doing, but are not saying anything, so the first partner continues unaware. As an example, if someone shuts down, they may lean away from you, they may or may not be smiling, they may have a very tight, restricted look on their face. Their eyes will usually be directed away, looking down, or looking up and away. If they do maintain eye contact, chances are their arms will be crossed. Arms being crossed is fascinating, in and of itself and has more than one meaning, but as the person doing the communicating and as the receiver of the communication it can send different messages. It may need to be checked out to prevent misinterpretation. Arms crossed could mean: They are angryThey feel encroached upon or threatenedThey are taking a stand or being stubbornThey feel anxious or uncomfortableThey are cold TONE: We once had a couple come in to see us where the wifes main complaint was that she didnt like the way her husband talks to her. She said she told him time and again that he had to stop talking so angrily towards her, and she couldnt handle the intensity when they talked. The husband was truly perplexed. He honestly though his wife must be hypertensive or looking into things that werent there because as he explained, he never yells or raises his voice towards her and he never says anything derogatory or mean to her. So what was going on? When explained to him that it was his tone and intensity of his voice that was conveying anger, he responded by saying Tone? Whats tone? He never knew that people can react to the tone of ones voice. He just thought communication was black and white, you are either yelling or not yelling. Tone can be much more subtle, but just as powerful. Many years ago, when I was going through a marriage prep class with my 1st husband, one of the marriage prep teachers, pulled me aside one day and asked me, if I ever noticed the tone of my voice before. I said No, what are talking about? He said that I had a tone to my voice that said Im not worthy to people. Now, I was shocked at first because of this mans honestly and truth. But he was dead on with how I was feeling inside at the time, and to my surprise it was actually coming through in my tone. So the bottom line, you may think you are just communicating with words, but there is a whole other conversation going on, that people can pick up by your tone whether it is intentional or unintentional. Lastly, there is INDIRECT COMMUNICATION It is very important to be a Direct Communicator, express what you feel, think or need directly. Communication is a very subjective art in the first place because everyone has filters when it comes to interpreting what other people mean due to your belief systems, your mood, past traumas, experience and education. What one thing means to you may not have the same meaning to another person. So if you are the type of person who uses indirect communication to express your needs you are complicating your communication ten fold. You are opening up tons of new interpretations that are not necessary, in hopes of couching your needs or hoping that you are not going to cause a reaction from the person you are asking the request from. The reality is that you are actually decreasing your chances of the person you are communicating with understanding what you want, plus you are potentially frustrating the other person with unclear messages. Sometimes, indirect communication can also cause the other person to feel like you are trying to control, care give or influence them, instead of stating what you want. The following are some examples from a book called Relationships and Family Living by EMC publishing, about what they call Coded Messages, that is used in schools to help teach elementary students to learn how the decode indirect communication. See if you can interpret Coded Messages. The answer key is underneath Coded Messages (See their corresponding Uncoded Messages Below): 1) “I wish I could get sick once in a while like Michael. He’s so lucky.” 2) “I got an “F” on this last English test. I can’t get into studying.” ________________ 3) “I want to talk with you about Dave. He’s gotten so he hates to come to school.” ________________ 4) “Daddy, please take me to the classroom for play school.” _________________ 5) “Why am I always the one being sent to detention? Everyone else was goofing around, too.” _________________ 6) “Dont call my parents about what I did. Theyll ground me forever.” ___________________ 7) “I dont like class. It’s noisy and I can’t accomplish anything.” __________________ 8) “Why do we have to study spelling? That doesn’t help me read faster.” ___________________ ANSWER KEY (Uncoded Messages) 1) I don’t want to go to school.2) He’s blaming his F on his studying skills.3) He’s not coming to school. 4) I want to play. 5) I’m mad about detention. It’s unfair.6) I’ll get in trouble.7) I cant think when it’s loud. 8) I’m a slow reader. SOLUTIONS So the following are suggestions for dealing with these forms of communications: 1) Be aware of your own Body Language, Tone and Indirect Communication. 2) Be aware of your partners Body Language, Tone and Indirect Communication. 3) If in doubt , check it out Ask always in a way so you are owning your own feelings or observations, such as I feel like you may be annoyed with me because I hear a sharpness in your voice, how do you feel? OR I noticed that your arms are crossed, how are you feeling or what are you thinking? If it is an indirect communication, feedback what you think they are saying and see if you have hit it on the nose or not. Sometimes, Indirect Communicators still wont tell you what they are really thinking, so reassure them that it is safe to voice their option or ask for what they want.
