Overwhelmed and Overworked: The Myth of American Productivity

April 10th, 2008 by lilablais

By Virginia Bola, PsyD Employment finally seemed back on track during the first few months of 2004. Politicians crowed that “Our tax cuts are working.” Then, without warning, job growth slowed to a crawl, resulting in a deficit of more than 2 million jobs from that confidently predicted only a year ago. To counteract that dismal performance, public emphasis turned to another indicator, productivity. The reported increases in American productivity are quite genuine. Individual worker output collectively rose, from 2000 to 2003, by a full 12 percent. Definitely a bonus for Wall Street - but what about Main Street? As the meticulous research of the Economic Policy Institute shows (Snapshot, 09/08/04), real family income fell, over the same period, by 3 percent. Contrast this with the economic period of 1947 - 1973 when productivity and real family income moved in tandem, both doubling over those years. What does this suggest? Americans are working harder and longer for less family income. As companies downsize or fail to replace workers who leave or retire, fewer staff are left to handle the workload. In fear of losing their own jobs, they respond by accepting new duties and new responsibilities and the added work time that accompanies them. In a world where employees are tethered to their workplaces virtually around the clock, by laptops, cell phones, and blackberries, the traditional balance of home and work has crumbled. There is a tendency to believe that such pressures are only operative for the ambitious, career-obsessed, “Apprentice”-like, ladder climbers. In fact, the sixty-hour-plus workweek affects a substantial portion of all salaried workers, even down to front line supervisory staff. The American worker, surveys clearly show, is becoming overwhelmed, over-tired, and fed up. Access rates for outpatient mental health services rise steadily each year. Family disruptions include increased estrangement, divorce, emotional child neglect, and domestic violence. Health problems multiply, fueled by fatigue, stress, and a lack of time for self-care. In the vaunted new technical world, where leisure time was to be expanded to historic proportions, we are working longer, harder, and more diligently than ever. Where can we look for answers? We can look at ourselves, identify our priorities, and learn to spend our time on what is important to us and let the rest go. More critically, we can speak up to make sure that social legislation and the tax code create similar priorities: to reward those companies who staff adequately and flexibly and provide benefits and resources to their employees. At the same time, we need to negatively impact companies who pursue such activities as job outsourcing, retiering of job titles to avoid overtime costs, dependence on temporary (usually none-benefited) labor, and the quiet acceptance of third world manufacturing of their products under sordid conditions, the use of child labor, and payment of slave wages. CEO salaries are running more than 130 times the median worker salary. Viewing the ethical and procedural problems of major corporate figures, now mired in the legal system, Americans must start to ask whether equality and opportunity for all is still a viable creed. Resistances To Marketing a Practice-Part 1

April 10th, 2008 by lilablais

By Juliet Austin If you are a therapist, counselor, or an alternative or complementary health practitioner (naturopath, homeopathetic doctor, massage therapist, body worker, etc.), in all likelihood, you are not only uninformed about effective marketing methods, but you are also likely to have some negative feelings about self promotion and marketing. When it comes to marketing a practice, knowing how to market effectively is essential. However, all the marketing knowledge in the world wont be of use to you if your resistances and fears get in the way of marketing. The most common resistances that helping and healing professionals have about marketing are outlined below. Fear of being rejected You may be concerned you are not skilled enough to attract clients for your private practice. Worries that people will be disapproving Perhaps you are concerned that if you market your practice, peers and potential clients might judge you or the services you offer. Fear of failing If you fear failure, you might avoid taking the risks necessary to succeed at marketing. Fear of being seen as aggressive This is a widespread fear that stems largely from of the misconception that marketing is about intruding upon others. Concerns about being seen as self-serving This fear stems in large part from the idea within the healing professions that your goal is to be there to fulfill your clients needs and not your own. In addition, you might believe that marketing your services means that you are “bragging.” Fear of lacking in knowledge and skills to market a practice sucessfully Obviously if you have never studied marketing, you may have concerns about your ability to do so effectively. Fears of being successful You could fear success because of a belief that you are undeserving of it. Perhaps you also fear that if you do succeed in private practice, your life will be different and you might not like the change that occurs. If you identify with any of the above resistances and fears and want to overcome them, read part 2 of this article, “Overcoming Resistances to Marketing a Practice.” Juliet Austin, 2004 Bio of Author Juliet assists helping and healing professionals (coaches, therapists, counselors, massage therapists, chiropractors, etc.) who are struggling to build their practices. The Five Worst Date Places

April 7th, 2008 by lilablais

By Jason OConnor Food in teeth, nausea, childhood stories and exposing your pot belly are all things you ought to avoid on first or second dates. You run the risk of experiencing these and other humiliating incidents if you choose the wrong place to bring your date. Good places are memorable, different, unique, cost-effective, and relevant to both of you in some way. Bad date places have none of these qualities and the worst places not only lack these things, but also embarrass you and assure that youll never get another date with the person again. Lets look at the function of a date. If youre single, a date acts like an interview. Your goal is to get the other person to still like you enough when the date is over to go out with you again, assuming youre still interested as well. Youre trying to appear cool, sexy, together, confident, and fun. Youre also trying to make the other person as comfortable as possible. Thats why avoiding the worst places is the first step in smart dating. The following lists the worst places you could choose to go on a date and I recommend that you avoid them like the plague if you want the other person to still like you when its over. An Amusement Park As the roller coaster nears its pinnacle your date looks over the side and silently swears under her breath at you for talking her into going on this ride. She hates roller coasters, has always been afraid of them, and is highly susceptible to motion sickness. As she contemplates her strategy to avoid you in the future, the coaster starts its stomach-turning decent, and she leans over and throws up in your lap, her way of saying Thanks for the great date. Amusement parks are a funky phenomenon. Youll often find overgrown stuffed animals running around trying to high-five you, screaming children, long lines, and overpriced food. Unless your date is an amusement park buff, its unlikely he or she is going to love the idea. *** The Beach *** Dont get me wrong, the beach is a great place. But from the point of view of a date with a near stranger, it stinks. First, theres an awful lot of sand and it can get everywhere. You cant easily eat on the beach; a lack of furniture contributes to that. With sand and bugs-o-plenty, eating ends up being a drag. But probably the worst thing about the beach is that youre compelled to take off most of your clothes. Now, if you both have hot bodies, well-groomed with flat stomachs and great muscle tone, then you have nothing to worry about. But if you dont, stay away from places that make you feel silly if you want to keep all your imperfection-hiding clothes on. *** A Non-Traditional Restaurant *** One time I took a date to a Japanese restaurant where they made everyone take off their shoes upon entering. There were no chairs, just floor-level tables that everyone sat around on little pillows. It didnt seem like it was going to be too bad until I started to smell my feet while eating our salads. The noxious odor must have been escaping from the various holes in my ratty socks. The whole night was humiliatingly awkward. Other places to avoid are eateries where youre expected to use your hands to feed yourself. A first date doesnt want to watch you maul your barbeque ribs and chicken legs like The Missing Link. No one likes the thought of being touched later on by greasy fingers. And have you ever eaten corn on the cob and come away with clean teeth? *** A Family Function *** I dont know about your family, but a few of my great-aunts have hairy faces. I mean really hairy, with partial beards and hairy moles. One of my uncles thinks hes still living in 1880 and uses every racist expression ever known. So it goes without saying that I never brought dates to family functions. And you shouldnt either. Weddings, reunions, baptisms, bat mitzvahs, and especially funerals, are out. Theres no such thing as a family that isnt dysfunctional. It doesnt exist. If you bring a first or second date to a family function be prepared for somebody to embarrass you. Grandma will ask you two when youre getting married and when to expect great grandchildren. And your little cousin Eunice will promptly tell your date all about the time you farted in church. *** Your Parents House for Dinner *** I cant think of a more uncomfortable setting than sitting at a dinner table with complete strangers in their own house. Dont put a date through this torture. You may have the hippest parents in the world. They may intelligent, hospitable and interesting. But dont subject anyone you just recently met to your parents for an entire dinner. Often the parent of your same sex looks like youre going to look in twenty five years. Youll find your date sizing up your parent asking themselves whether theyll be ok with your pot belly and hairy ears a couple of decades from now. Bringing your date to your parents house is just asking for trouble. Your mom may temporarily forget that youre trying to make an impression and start talking to you like youre thirteen years old again, Before you leave tonight my little muffin, can you take your hemorrhoid ointment out of our medicine cabinet, daddy keeps using it for lip cream by mistake. Dates can be traumatic and nerve-racking in the best of places so dont make it harder on either of you than you have to. There are some great places to take a date that will make you look like a hero, wont cost you too much, will give you just enough time to talk to each other, but will also provide an entertaining distraction. Im talking about museums, jazz shows, rock concerts, musicals, art shows, plays and live comedy. These are all cool places to bring a first or second date. They allow you to talk and be entertained at the same time. These types of places make the date memorable, distinct and out of the ordinary. It shows you put more than just a little thought in the idea. And if youre trying to get someone to go out with you for the first time, find out what kind of bands, shows, comedians or plays they like, buy a couple of tickets, and casually invite them along with an explanation like your buddy just cancelled on you and you have a free ticket that you dont want to waste. Natural Weight Loss Ideas

April 6th, 2008 by lilablais

By Steve Polk It’s no wonder, that with all the modern conveniences that society has to offer we have become a nation of overweight people. The rate of overweight Americans has climbed steadily as technology has made life easier. With that in mind, here are a few natural weight loss ideas. With just a few simple changes in our daily routine, you can lose a few extra pounds. 1) Buy a bicycle, and use it for short trips to visit friends or to pick up a few items at the store. 2) Don’t try to find the nearest parking spot to whatever store or event you are visiting. Isn’t it funny, how people going to a health club spend lots of time trying to find a parking space close to the entrance! You’ll burn a few extra calories and save some time by parking further away. 3) If your kids play a sport take a brisk walk around the park or field during their warm ups. This will help keep you warm while you are waiting. Take another players parents with you.. It’s a great way to get to know someone new. 4) Speed clean. Raking leaves? Sweeping the floor? Time yourself and see if you can beat your time the next time you do the same cleaning project. This works great on your weekly or daily cleaning rituals. I would not suggest this when cleaning the toilet! 5) Try speed walking when your taking your dog for a walk. It’s great exercise and your dog will enjoy the faster pace. 6) Every time a commercial comes on while your watching T.V. get up and just move around. Maybe a few sit ups, push ups, or see how many times you can walk to the other side or your house or apartment. 7) Make up your own list of natural weight loss ideas based on the ordinary things you do every day. With a little thought you’ll be able to come up with some clever ways to help you burn a few extra calories. Nokia 6133 Review - An Attractive Clamshell Phone

April 5th, 2008 by lilablais

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_Sherer]Andrew Sherer The Nokia 6133 is the latest from Nokia with an attractive clamshell design. Its lighter than most other phones, weighing in at a light 102 grams. The Nokia 6133 is a tad on the thicker side, though, at about 0.82 inches wide. The slick rubbery shell and chrome-lined 240 x 320 display are both attractive and eye catching. A small button on the top right side of the phone can be used to open the phone with a push, a great feature to have if your hands are occupied. Roam international lines with the Nokia 6133 T-Mobile, its a quad band phone. Youll also be suprised to find a wide variety of calling features available, like Bluetooth, a handy speakerphone, as well as conference calling that will support 5 calls in one conversation. If youre a fan of instant messanging youll love the Nokia 6133. Typing messages on the 6133 is easy and quick. Theres also support for AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo, among others. Surf the web on your Nokia 6133, too. The 1.3 megapixel camera takes clear shots and decent video. The colors are rich and balanced, as well. Switch up the settings if you want, you can change picture quality, picture size, video quality, video resolution, and more. With 11 MB of build-in memory, you have some room to save your music and files, but still not a whole lot. Expand your memory with a microSD expansion, youll be glad you did. The pros of the Nokia 6133: The Nokia 6133 performs nicely, has a great looking internal display, and offers many popular features including Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel cam, a speakerphone, radio, and world phone support. The cons of the Nokia include a couple minor things. The Nokia 6133’s keys are slippery, and its MicroSD card slot is in a bad spot. Overall the Nokia 6133 is a well designed phone that has all the features an average person could want. Written by Andrew Scherer. Take 5 Minutes to Protect YOUR Family Name

April 3rd, 2008 by lilablais

By Kay Zahn Have you ever “Googled” yourself? Do it and you may be surprised at how many people share your name or some combination of it. A fact easily verified by opening a local phone book in many cases. On the internet however, there will only be ONE domain name like yours exactly the way you’d like it. The question is, will it be registered to you or to someone else with whom you share a name? Don’t Let someone else take YOUR name online.. Even if you don’t use it for now, you should register and claim your family name before someone else does. Aside from the many reasons you may have for wanting to own your name on the internet, your number one reason should be CONTROL. Control over your content your address, your email, your online identity. Do you remember when you had to worry about changing your phone number if you changed your phone service company? Well it was never like that on the internet, but you had to know that to take advantage of it. It was widely assumed that people needed to be assigned their personal domain address rather than choose it. By making this assumption of course the ISP has their name out there floating around with your communications which helps their marketing efforts. It’s true that some of the services being offered can be a bit overwhelming but don’t be distracted by all the services that come with everybody’s different package. Take what you need and leave the rest (as the saying goes) but take 5 minutes today and Register Your Family Name. Then it can be yours to build upon forever. It’s so easy these days there is no excuse not to claim your name online NOW. Register your personal or family DOMAIN name and then learn to control it. Most online service providers provide you with easy to use interfaces where you control where requests for your domain are directed. You can keep your current email service provider and ISP. Just register your name and set up an email address that you have forwarded to your current address. Then when and if you ever leave that service provider YOU control your domain name and can simply have your email forwarded somewhere else. The same thing applies to your web site. Whether you want a commercial web site or a family gathering spot, a blog or just a place that you can use to store important stuff online. You are going to want an address to remember, and what could be easier than your name. Your domain services (email, web site, blog) can be located anywyere you want, you can use your domain name to “point” to the correct place. It never ceases to amaze me when I see people using email addresses that will virtually ensure they will be forgotten. If you want to be remembered, get an address that belongs to “you and yours” so you can build your online identity around it. If you go through life with an AOL.com address and WANT someone to remember you, trust me they won’t. Why? Because commercial services like MSN, AOL even Yahoo.com and Google Gmail are just TOO BIG. Trying to come up with a unique name results in a lot of obscure “add ons”. You know the ones. Shannon4994 might be easy for Shannon to remember because she was married on April 9th 1994, but for anyone else it may as well be a foreign language. There’s no reason to settle for such obscurity. Register Your Family Name TODAY. It could be the most important 5 minutes of your online future. Using Green Tea to Burn Belly Fat

March 28th, 2008 by lilablais

By Jamie Clark Belly fat is a big problem for millions of people. Luckily, there are several ways to lose it without resorting to synthetic drugs and stimulants. Some of the best natural fat-burning substances in the world — called catechins — are found in abundance in green tea. What makes these chemicals so great for weight loss? For one thing, catechins have been shown to stimulate fat metabolism and help the body burn fat more efficiently. For another, Japanese researchers recently found that supplements containing green tea extract may help to significantly improve endurance (allowing you to exercise harder, longer). Green tea has also been shown to be a good glucose regulator. Basically, this means that it can help keep your blood sugar levels from skyrocketing after eating a meal with lots of starchy carbohydrates. Controlling blood sugar — and the fat-storing hormones the body produces to deal with high blood sugar (such as insulin) — is vital to losing weight and keeping it off. Add the fact that green tea contains significant amounts of natural caffeine — a well-proven fat burner and endurance enhancer — and you can see why it can be such a powerful tool in the fight against belly fat. One of the best things about green tea is that, not only has it been proven safe over thousands of years of human consumption, it’s also been shown to be incredibly healthy. In fact, it’s hard to imagine a healthier way to lose weight. Antioxidant substances found in tea, including the previously-mentioned catechins, have been shown to help fight heart disease, prevent cancer, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce inflammation… all while helping your body burn more fat. To experience the fat-burning, health-boosting effects of green tea you need to drink several cups a day. In fact, if weight loss is your main goal, you should probably drink at least 4 or 5 cups per day, if not more. Don’t feel like drinking so much tea? An alternative is to take a supplement containing green tea extract. There are several good ones on the market now. One thing’s for sure: If you want to slim down, you really can’t go wrong with green tea. It will give you more energy, help you work out harder, enhance your body’s ability to burn fat, and help protect you against disease. So go make yourself a hot cup of the stuff right now… you won’t regret it! Jamie Clark is a health writer and big fan of green tea. Steak

March 26th, 2008 by lilablais

By Max Bellamy A steak is a slice of meat that is cut from the flesh of an animal or a large fish. Beef steaks are by far the most popular type of steak. However, steaks of chicken, turkey and lamb are also ordered in restaurants. Steaks may be cooked by grilling, roasting, pan-frying or broiling. Steaks take little time to cook and can be eaten both as an entre and as a main course. They are eaten with rice, noodles, bread or pasta, usually with a vegetable or mushroom side-dish. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) voluntarily grades steaks according to the marbling and the tenderness of the flesh. Marbling refers to the flecks of white fat that are seen within the steak. Almost all the steaks available in the market fall into the first three grades. The best grade of steak (and the tenderest!) is the prime cut. Filet mignon is the best quality and the softest variety of steak, followed by the sirloin. Only about 2% of steak available in the market falls under the prime category and that too winds up in hotels and restaurants. After the prime cut, there is the choice cut. These cuts are what are generally available in the stores. A little tougher than the choice cut is the select cut. The other grades are standard, commercial, utility, cutter and canner in the decreasing order of their qualities. The manner of cutting the steak from the flesh of the animal is of importance. Usually the steak is cut perpendicular to the striations on the muscle. This makes the steak tender and easy to chew. The tenderness of steak also depends on which part of beef the slice has been cut from. The sirloin, or the portion of the beef located in the mid portion of the hindquarters, and the filet mignon from the small end of the tenderloin are supposed to be the tenderest. The filet mignon is the most expensive beef cut. Among steaks, the trend noted is that as the tenderness increases, the flavor reduces. Filet mignon is the tenderest steak, but it has the mildest flavor. Chuck steaks, flank steaks and rib steaks are tougher to chew, but they have more beefy flavors. Steaks may have originated in France, but every country has developed several indigenous recipes to prepare steaks. King Henry VIII of England was a steak aficionado. In fact it has been supposed that the word sirloin has been coined by him. In Asia and Africa, steak kebabs are popular and there are scores of methods of preparing these kebabs. Raw steaks are available in butcher shops and grocery stores. While buying steak, the red hued ones must be preferred. Like all other meats, steaks need cold storage. Steaks that are aged for long times get an enhanced flavor. Steak provides detailed information about steak, flank steak, grilling steak and more. Steak is affiliated with Disposable Chef Hats.
